Most of the Indian population rely on ground water as their primary source for drinking water. Unfortunately, the ground water available in the most of the rural areas are found to be contaminated with poisonous elements such as Arsenic, Fluoride and Iron. Only in West Bengal 09 out of 19 districts are known to be arsenic affected. So the people of the deltaic region of West Bengal are compelled to drink arsenic contaminated water above the permissible level.
At the same time, the poor condition of sanitation system and lack of awareness about hygiene practice cause many water borne disease like diarrhea, cholera etc to spread in the form of epidemic. Surely, the problems need serious attention and need immediate remedies.
A likeminded group of enthusiastic people decided to contribute their valuable effort to search a way out of this grave problem. They established an organization in the year of 2007 and named it Shibpur Association for Technological, Humanitarian and Environmental Endeavours(SATHEE). They quickly partnered with Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU),West Bengal, India, which is renowned for their expertise in Arsneic Removal Technologies and contacted various other organisations like "Water for People" to get funded. This is the brief history of SATHEE and surely the journey will be a long and fruitful one.
